Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative Medicine (RM) is a biomedical approach to clinical treatment, which involves a process of replacing or regenerating damaged or lost human tissue.  Regenerative Medicine is applied in chronic pain conditions by precisely injecting platelet rich plasma (PRP) and/or stem cells using Ultrasound or Fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance into degenerative joints and damaged soft tissue in order to facilitate healing and restore normal anatomy and function.

What is a stem cell?

A stem cell is an undifferentiated master cell that can give rise to an indefinite number of cells of the same type of tissue, and from which certain other kinds of cells arise by differentiation.

What are the Sources of Stem Cells?

There are several sources of human stem cells including human umbilical cord tissue, bone marrow, cord blood and adipose (fat) tissue.  In pain management, Stem Cells can be utilized for the treatment of damaged human tissue due to injury, aging or disease including osteoarthritis, neuropathy, musculoskeletal disease and more.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma is the liquid component of your blood called plasma, and the rigid cells that help it clot, called platelets. It contains a plethora of growth factors and mediators, produced by centrifuging a large volume of the patients own blood into fractionated portions of plasma (PRP) and waste, which is discarded. PRP injections can help promote the repair process of joint injuries and relieve inflammation.

What Painful conditions can regenerative medicine treat?

The doctors at Interventional Pain & Regenerative Medicine Specialists utilize regenerative medicine and develop an individualized treatment plan for your painful condition.  We strive to educate each patient to make the best decision about regenerative medicine and their health and well-being.  Regenerative medicine may be considered for medical conditions such as:

  • Chronic joint and muscle pain
  • Muscle tears and strains

  • Arthritis or trauma-derived cartilage damage

Regenerative medicine targets the root cause of pain instead of just managing the symptoms of aging or injured joints or ligaments.  If you suffer from pain due to musculoskeletal or joint conditions, the doctors at Interventional Pain and Regenerative Medicine Specialists will perform a thorough evaluation and devise an individualized treatment plan to include regenerative medicine options.  Call our office to schedule an appointment or book online today.
